The award-winning barbecue caterers of Billy Bones BBQ will be serving up barbecued ribs, smoked pork sandwiches and smoked bratwurst on Aug. 19, 20 and 21 at Ypsilanti's Heritage Festival to help raise money for the University of Michigan Transplant Center.

(I-Newswire) - ANN ARBOR, MI - The award-winning barbecue caterers of Billy Bones BBQ will be serving up barbecued ribs, smoked pork sandwiches and smoked bratwurst on Aug. 19, 20 and 21 at Ypsilanti's Heritage Festival to help raise money for the University of Michigan Transplant Center.

Owner Billy Bones said knowing so many children need transplants inspired him to begin donating to the U-M Transplant Center. For five years he has helped to fund programs at the center such as Camp Michitanki, a summer camp for children who have undergone transplant surgery. The U-M Transplant Center is now Billy Bones BBQ's principle charity.

"The kids can get to see mud coming up between their toes or hold a real frog. Their whole world is pretty sterile most of the time, so they just get a different look on their face when they're out there at camp. That sucked me in. I want every kid to have that look on their face," Bones said.

Billy Bones and his crew, known for their original, tangy, hot and jalapeño sauces, seasonings and dry rubs, have traveled through the United States and Canada during the past 25 years and have won more than 200 awards in state and national competitions, including more than 50 first place finishes.

Bob Garypie, development events director at the U-M Transplant Center, said Bones has donated up to $24,000 to the center at previous events.

“Billy is a very kind-hearted guy. He wants kids to have the resources they need to have their health and quality of life restored,” Garypie said. “We are very grateful that Billy has maintained this very generous commitment to the Transplant Center”

In addition to Camp Michitanki, proceeds from the event will help fund several projects at the U-M Transplant Center, including those aimed at advancing research and providing financial help to patients.

Billy Bones BBQ will be at the Heritage Festival from noon to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Volunteers from the Transplant Center will be working alongside Bones at the event, learning some of his grill secrets and passing out Michigan Donor Registry cards.
